Nvidia reveals $800 GeForce RTX 2080 at Gamescom 2018

The new Turning GPU architecture along with the new NVIDIA RTX platform is able to run up to 6X the performance of previous-generation GPUs and enables the power of real-time ray tracing along with powerful artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning enhanced graphics. The company's new Turing architecture, however, can automatically simulate the light rays in real time.

NVIDIA has released two new trailers for Metro Exodus and Atomic Heart, detailing their real-time ray tracing features. An image of the prices from the Nvidia Australian site is reproduced below. With ray-tracing, an in-game graphics engine can depict light that will accurately bounce and diffuse across a room in a more realistic fashion. It maps the path of light from objects all the way to the camera view, as each photon bounces off surface after surface. To make the process a bit simpler, the light is sent backwards from the camera to the light source, as it reduces some of the computational load. It's not exactly photorealistic, but it's a significant improvement over current rendering techniques.

The presentation was punctuated with a host of detailed explanations about different lighting techniques, real-time ray tracing, and other rendering techniques. This is why it was only really used in 3D animation, such as animated movies, which are slowly rendered on a frame by frame basis over a period of several months.

The GeForce Gamescom keynote was where we expected Nvidia to unveil its new PC gaming technology, and on that front it didn't disappoint. The RTX 2080 Ti would ship with 11GB of memory, and have 78 trillion RTX-OPS and 10 Giga Rays/s of performance.
