Oscars Adding Popular Film Category

Oscars Adding Popular Film Category

On Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the February 24, 2019, ceremony will feature a few additions - including a new category celebrating outstanding achievement in popular film.

While details of the popular film category are yet to be announced, it could be a way of superhero films finally breaking through to the Oscars with the acclaimed box office hit Black Panther possibly making an appearance. One of the more notable technical changes is, per The Hollywood Reporter, focusing on a three-hour broadcast that will present some categories live during commercial breaks to ensure the telecast does not go on too long. "The Board of Governors took this charge seriously", the message stated. The most attention-grabbing announcement is the arrival of a new award for Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film.

But the 2020 telecast, which was planned for February 23, will now move to February 9.

- draemc (@draemc1)a popular film category??? The most-watched telecast in Oscars history was in 1998 when "Titanic" won. Even with this change it still can do that of course, but adding a new category just widens the net. "The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast", Bailey and Hudson explain in the letter shared by THR. The 2018 best picture victor, "The Shape of Water", had grossed $57.4 million in the United States by the time the awards aired and $63.9 million total.

Scott Feinberg reports that the Academy has made a decision to only feature select wins on the telecast to keep the show trimmed to a solid three hours. Luckily, every now and then, they make moves that show that they're kind of listening (though after having the lowest-rated Academy Awards showing previous year, they kind of have to, right?).

The Oscars ceremony will be trimmed by handing out some awards during commercial breaks instead of honoring all winners, including those in categories like sound editing and costumes, along with actors, writers and director.

In 1929 at the first Oscars ceremony, the Academy awarded films in two separate categories - Outstanding Picture and Unique And Artistic Picture - both considered the top awards of the night. "We have the MTV Movie Awards for that kind of junk", he said.
