Subtropical storm Ernesto becomes better organized over the Atlantic

It will be a subtropical storm and it would be given the next name on the 2018 Atlantic Tropical Season list, which is Ernesto.

The term "subtropical" means the system now lacks the symmetrical characteristics of most tropical storms. The system has about two days to develop into a pure tropical storm before the environment becomes hostile for development. In some ways it's a distinction without a difference for everyone but meteorologists.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica says Sub-Tropical Storm Ernesto had maximum sustained winds remain near 65 km/h with higher gusts and some strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours. Tropical storm-force winds of 39 mph or more extend up to 35 miles from Lane's center, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, which monitors East Pacific storms. Starting late Thursday, into Friday, the cyclone will be moving over much colder water which should cause it to become post-tropical by the weekend.

So, you're feeling pretty good about all this - we're approaching the peak of hurricane season and you haven't had to think about those shutters or emergency supplies yet.

By the end of this week, the third subtropical storm of the year could be named Ernesto. But forecasters are urging Hawaii residents to watch Lane closely as it marches closer to the Central Pacific. Additionally, most of the storms associated with the system are far from the center.
