The Eagles overtake Michael Jackson's Thriller for best-selling album of all time

The Eagles overtake Michael Jackson's Thriller for best-selling album of all time

It's the first time the album has been re-evaluated since 2006.

The record has reached 38 million copies in sales and streams, achieving 38-times platinum status, according to the Associated Press.

Country-rockers the Eagles have surpassed Michael Jackson to score the biggest-selling album of all time in the USA, with the Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975.

Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 and Thriller have parried for the top position on that list for years. Thriller's numbers were updated previous year.

RIAA also said that the Eagles' "Hotel California", released in 1977, is now 26x platinum and makes it the third best-selling album of all-time. (1,500 streams of an album equal one sale, while 10 song downloads also equal a complete album sale.) Thriller still holds the top spot in worldwide sales, however, with 47 million copies sold.

Previously, before the advent of streaming technology, the RIAA only counted traditional record sales, but ever since 2013 they've begun counting streams from YouTube, Spotify, and other streaming services.

The Eagles came to prominence in the 1970's in Los Angeles and released a number of huge hits that have continued to stay relevant.

Eagles' songwriter Don Henley has made a statement on the achievement. Now, though, the Recording Industry Association of America has retabulated the numbers, and it turns out The Eagles have taken back the best-seller crown - and they've done it decisively.

Though sometimes mocked in pop culture (most famously in The Big Lebowski), the Eagles have enjoyed a resurgence of interest lately thanks to the two-part documentary series History of the Eagles.
