Tommy Fleetwood British Open payout: Wrong Fleetwood gets $154K

Fleetwood has four European Tour titles to his name, and finished second at the US Open in June.

If you follow golf at all you might recognize the name; British pro Tommy Fleetwood is now ranked 11th in the world and is a trendy pick for this weekend's PGA Championship at Bellerive in St. Louis.

One of the Florida pro's friends posted a picture of Fleetwood's account to Twitter on Wednesday.

"My friend Tommy is club pro at the Streamsong Resort in Central Florida and I was with him there today when he received a notification on his cellphone", Thorner told the Telegraph. "That's when I realized that it must be for the other Tommy Fleetwood and I quickly worked out that it was his Open winnings", Thorner, a golf coach, added.

The American Tommy Fleetwood shared a screenshot showing he had been credited $154,480 by the European Tour. "He got on to his bank immediately and they didn't know what to say. At least, he can always say he won $150,000 at the Open", Thorner joked.

Caddie Fleetwood told Reuters he was trying to get in touch with English world No.11 to put the player's mind at ease that the money would be refunded.

Fleetwood, who begins his PGA Championship bid at Bellerive on Thursday, said: "It looks pretty genuine".

Fleetwood's payout was reportedly deposited into the Wells Fargo bank account of a man with the same name, according to a screencap tweeted by golf school owner Greg Thorner, apparently a friend of the other Fleetwood. They [the European Tour] are looking into it and I'm sure they'll feel pretty bad about it.

'It's a amusing story.

It took me about an hour to get that sorted out, and I have plenty more stories like that.
