Tourist on bike struck and killed by vehicle in Manhattan

"The two reportedly rode around Lower Manhattan on Thursday, and enjoyed it so much that they chose to tour Central Park and the Upper West Side on a bike on Friday".

The 23-year-old was riding her bike beside Central Park West when she was struck just after 4.45pm Friday, local time.

Twenty-four cyclists were killed on NY streets past year. "For her to be taken from us in such a horrific way is gut-wrenching".

Felipe D Chairez, 44, has been charged with driving while intoxicated, driving while ability impaired and operating a commercial vehicle with an alcohol reading of 0.04 per cent - 0.06 per cent or less, the New York Police Department (NYPD) confirmed.

Lyden was rushed from the scene in New York's Upper West Side to Mount Sinai West Hospital after the collision, where she sadly passed away. More and more people are traveling by bike in our city, and they need safe, protected space.

"Our girl was on the trip of a lifetime, and she'd only spoken to me I think the previous day ... and said, 'Dad, can you believe your little girl is in New York City?' " teary-eyed dad Andrew Lyden told Tasmania's Southern Cross News.

"This is disgusting what happened here", he said.

'This is another example, from my point of view, of the danger of reckless driving.

Abc7ny reported upon Madison Lyden swerving into merged traffic, only to be struck by the private sanitation truck and suffering 'severe head trauma'. We're going to make sure there's a full investigation and we're going to make sure that there are real consequences if anything happened here that was illegal'.

The drivers of the livery cab and the truck remained at the scene.
