Trump fires back at Navy admiral asking for revoked security clearance

Trump has repeatedly targeted Ohr as a source for Mueller and his investigation.

"If you think for a moment that your McCarthy-era tactics will suppress the voices of criticism, you are sadly mistaken", McRaven said. "Bruce Ohr is a disgrace". That is disqualifying for Mueller.

Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein, while not specifying Ohr's current job, has said that he has no involvement in Mueller's investigation, begun a year ago.

He wrote in Thursday's New York Times that Trump "clearly has become more desperate to protect himself and those close to him".

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday he plans to revoke the security clearance of Bruce Ohr, a Justice Department official whose wife was employed at the company that was involved in producing the dossier on Trump's links to Russian Federation. The signers - who served in Democratic and Republican administrations - called Trump's action "ill-considered".

Former CIA director John Brennan, whose security clearance you revoked on Wednesday, is one of the finest public servants I have ever known.

The first letter, which was initially signed by 12 former senior intelligence officials from each administration going back to Ronald Reagan's presidency, added three signatories since it was first published Thursday.

Trump later said that he stripped Brennan's clearance because of his role in investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election. "So I think it's something that had to be done", the president said, according to CNBC.

The president's remarks and the report from the Washington Post escalated worsening tensions between the White House and the intelligence community.

"I suspect I'll be taking it away very quickly", Trump said.

"There's no silence. If anything, I'm giving them a bigger voice", Trump said.

"Many people don't even know who [McRaven] is, and now he has a bigger voice".

Patrick Cotter, a former assistant USA attorney in the Eastern District of NY and a longtime white-collar defence attorney, said that while a prosecutor could argue that Trump's targeting of clearances was intended as a warning that "if you contribute to, participate in, support the Russian Federation probe and I find out about it, I'm going to punish you", it is likely not obstruction in itself.

According to former acting Central Intelligence Agency director Michael Morell, Gates was out of cell range when the letter was originally released, but he's an "important voice".

"This action is quite clearly a signal to other former and current officials", the letter says. "That signal is inappropriate and deeply regrettable.

Decisions on security clearances should be based on national security and not political views".

Brennan said earlier this week he would "not relent" despite the removal of his clearance.

That directly contradicted a July 2017 statement from Trump Jr. - written with the consultation of the White House - that claimed the meeting had been primarily about adoption.

A retired Navy admiral who oversaw the raid that killed Osama bin Laden is telling President Donald Trump that he'd be honored if Trump would yank his security clearance just like he did to former CIA Director John Brennan.
