Trump's Military Parade, Which Could Cost $90 Million Dollars, Postponed

When he met Macron again months later at the United Nations, he told him, "It was one of the greatest parades I've ever seen", adding, "We're going to have to try and top it".

"The Department of Defence and White House have been planning a parade to honour America's military veterans and commemorate the centennial of first world war", said Pentagon spokesman Colonel Rob Manning.

However, new estimates place the cost of the parade at $92 million - $80 million more than the initial estimates of $12 million. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity. An anonymous US defense official said $50 million would come from the Pentagon and $42 million would come from interagency partners like the Department of Homeland Security.

The language "agreed to explore opportunities" is an exceptionally vague phrase - giving the distinct impression that Defense Department officials don't ever plan on holding the parade at all.

The announcement was seen as a setback for the president, who had ordered the show of air power after being impressed by France's Bastille Day parade past year. About half that amount would have been for non-military costs like security.

However, Reuters cites unnamed officials saying the parade's true cost would be three to nine times higher, at $92 million.

"Include wheeled vehicles only, no tanks - consideration must be given to minimize damage to local infrastructure", the memo said. Big, heavy tanks could tear up streets in the District of Columbia.

The White House budget office had told Congress that the total cost of the parade would be somewhere between $10 million and $30 million.

The American Legion, a veterans organization, said earlier Thursday that while it appreciated that Trump wanted to show support for US troops, other priorities should win out.

The American Legion's national commander, Denise H. Rohan, issued a statement that said the parade money would be better spent on funding the Department of Veterans Affairs.
