Airlines Waiving Change Fees Ahead of Hurricane Florence

More than a million people were under evacuation orders in the eastern United States Tuesday, where powerful Hurricane Florence threatened catastrophic damage to a region popular with vacationers and home to crucial government institutions. It was located farther north in the Atlantic than any other storm to ever hit the Carolinas, so what we're forecasting is unprecedented.

He cited forecasts showing Florence was likely to stall over North Carolina, "bringing days and days of rain". He said there was no impact during 2016's Hurricane Matthew, which struck the state.

SC has been impacted by three of the nation's costliest hurricanes based on insured damage. Its crops include corn, soy and cotton, making agriculture the state's No. 1 industry, valued at $87 billion.

The vehicle park has been full for three days at the Ace Hardware store in coastal Calabash, North Carolina, where manager Tom Roberts said he sold 150 gas cans in two hours Monday, along with generators, plywood, rope, manual can openers, sand bags and a plethora of other items. "I'll tell you, agriculture is in the heart of that bull's eye".

Its centre will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Centre said. Colleton, Beaufort, and Jasper counties are no longer under the mandatory evacuations. North Carolina is the top US turkey producer, ranks third for chicken and is home to more hogs than any state other than Iowa, government data show. That timing was not lost on Elaine Chao, secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

In 2017, its farmers raised 830.8 million chickens for meat, 9 percent of the USA flock, and 32.5 million turkeys, or 13 percent of the US total, according to USDA data.

One trusted computer model, the European simulation, predicted more than 115cm in parts of North Carolina. Carcasses were composted inside the houses where the birds were being raised.

The National Hurricane Center Tuesday afternoon increased its rainfall forecast to 15 to 25 inches of rain and 35 inches in isolated spots.

The storm is forecast to make landfall in the Carolinas as a strong Category 3 sometime late Thursday or early Friday. East Carolina officials say they had decided the team wouldn't travel to Blacksburg due to "significant imminent safety concerns", including "perilous travel conditions before, during and after the storm". That 1996 storm caused some of the worst damage in North Carolina history. On Tuesday, rain halted his progress.

"From eight o'clock 'til two we were slammed", said Johnson, who sold scores of bags of sand over the weekend, saving just a few to barricade the store's own doors.

And the storm surge, which could be as much as 12 feet in some areas, will be on top of sea level rise from climate change. "Nobody would have the capacity to handle your animals", he said. Its hurricane-force winds extend up to 60 miles from the storm's center.

ECU officials say they hope to be able to reschedule the game later this season. For example, the seas off of Wilmington, North Carolina have risen 7.5 inches since 1935, according to NOAA. "Some neighbors started defoliating a little bit of cotton last week, but most are waiting until after the storm passes".

North Carolina's governor, Roy Cooper, said: "North Carolina is taking #HurricaneFlorence seriously, and you should too".

"This is a risky storm, this storm will and has the potential to cause loss of life", said Jeff Byard, the associate administrator of FEMA. British American Tobacco's Reynolds American, parent of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco, declined to comment. So the land can't absorb much more water.
