Details emerge in ‘extremely troubling’ slaying of golf champion Celia Barquín

Relatives of the 22-year-old Iowa man charged in the stabbing death of a top amateur golfer from Spain say they're "devastated by the tragedy".

Richards is charged with first-degree murder in Barquin's death.

Barquin Arozamena was golfing that morning at Coldwater Golf Links on the south side of town when Richards apparently abducted her on the ninth hole about 10 a.m., Ames Police Commander Geoff Huff said in a news conference on Tuesday. Police said Richards was jobless, had been living in a tent in an encampment near the course and had spoken of his desire to "rape and kill a woman". An immigrant from Mexico is charged in the July slaying of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts, who vanished while out for a run in the town of Brooklyn.

When police arrived, the man said Richards appeared "disheveled" and "covered in blood, sand and water".

Of Richards, she said, "He was just going out with the goal of killing".

It was just a month later Richards found himself in front of judge again for stealing a auto. Dogs tracked his scent and found him with fresh scratches on his face consistent with fighting and a deep laceration on his left hand. A judge Tuesday ordered him held in jail on Dollars 5 million bond.

None of that earned Richards prison time or a felony conviction, in part because prosecutors agreed to plea deals that reduced charges to misdemeanors and judges imposed sentences of probation.

An acquaintance of Richards told investigators that the suspect had said in recent days that he had "an urge to rape and kill a woman", the complaint said.

The university's women's golf team withdrew from a competition in MI to return home to grieve her death.

"She loved Iowa State and was an outstanding representative for our school".

Born in Puente San Miguel, Spain, Barquín was completing a degree in civil engineering and was described by Iowa State director of athletics Jamie Pollard as "a spectacular student-athlete and ISU ambassador". "We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best and her passion for life".

Sergio Garcia has led tributes to murdered amateur Spanish golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena. Records show he was arrested weeks later after he was found passed out near an Ames liquor store, telling police he took antidepressants before drinking alcohol.

Employees of Sparky's One Stop saw him try to steal two energy drinks and confronted him.

The harassment case stems from an incident in January 2015 where he threatened to shoot up a gas station in Guthrie County after clerks there claim they caught him trying to steal energy drinks.

Court records show that since 2014, Richards had been charged with abusing a former girlfriend, stealing a pickup truck after wrecking his own vehicle, using a baseball bat to smash a auto window and burglarizing a gas station.
