Florence strengthens to Category 4, Carolinas, Virgina coasts evacuating

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster ordered a statewide coastal evacuation ahead of Hurricane Florence, which is forecast to slam into the Carolinas as a Category 4 monster storm.

SC ordered the mandatory evacuation of one million coastal residents while North Carolina ordered an evacuation of the Outer Banks, barrier islands that are a popular tourist destination.

The storm's first effects were already apparent on barrier islands as risky rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over a state highway. That storm killed as many as 3,000 people and left the entire island without power for weeks and in some locations months.

Kottlowski is concerned that Florence will slow down and possibly stall near or inland of the coast, potentially leading to a life-threatening flooding situation.

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham also warned that Florence is expected to linger once onshore, downing trees, knocking out electricity and causing widespread flooding. "We've just been overwhelmed with requests by state agencies and everybody else", he said.

Hurricane Florence is likely to strengthen to a Category 5 storm as it approaches the USA where 1.7 million people have been warned to get out of the way.

The Navy ordered all ships at the world's largest base to sea on Monday to avoid the battering of Hurricane Florence.

Residents of North and SC began evacuating coastal areas on Monday, after Hurricane Florence intensified into a category four storm, stripping supermarket shelves and stocking up on fuel for their cars.

Other top officials involved in last year's hurricane season, including Long and Nielsen, also remain in place.

The National Hurricane Center upgraded the storm twice Monday, to a Category 4 hurricane.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Olivia triggered warnings for multiple Hawaiian islands, blowing westward and expected to arrive in the state as soon as late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

"I have just been informed that this is one of the worst hurricanes that came to the East coast for many years".

Maps of the storm's trajectory showed it most likely to hit the North Carolina shore near the SC border, making it the most powerful storm to threaten the USA mainland this year and the first of its magnitude in 29 years to strike the Carolinas.

Monday is the climatological peak date of hurricane season, the height of the eight-week period when the most powerful storms usually form, CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri said.

It's now at a Category 4.
