Hurricane Florence Makes Landfall in North Carolina

Hurricane Florence was making landfall on the North Carolina coast, bringing with it life-threatening storm surge, heavy rain and sustained winds of 90 miles per hour.

Hundreds of people are awaiting rescue from their homes in New Bern, North Carolina, as flood waters continue to rise from Hurricane Florence. "If I can't get back in a week, after a while they might turn on each other or trash the place".

Response teams had already "brought in busloads" of rescued people from areas including Fairfield Harbor, New Bern, Adams Creek and Township 7, she said.

As the giant, 644km/hr hurricane pounded away, it unloaded heavy rain, flattened trees, chewed up roads and knocked out power to more than 600,000 homes and businesses.

With graphics depicting an intersection on a street in the American state of North Carolina, the forecaster explains what is likely to happen as the water engulfs the state's coastline amid sound effects of wind, rain and rushing water.

The town of Oriental had gotten more than 457mm of rain just a few hours into the deluge, while Surf City had 355mm and it was still coming down.

More than 634,000 homes and businesses were without power in North and SC early on Friday, utility officials said.

Rainfall will be one of the most destructive elements of hurricane Florence, with heavy rain triggering unsafe flash floods and potential landslides.

Hurricane-force winds will tear through more than 15,000 square miles of the Southeast in the next several days, even as Hurricane Florence starts to slow down.

The station reported the fourth death involved a 77-year-old Kinston man who family members said died at 8 a.m. Friday when he was "blown down by the wind" while tending dogs.

After appearing headed toward the North Carolina-Virginia border at one point, Florence shifted south and is now taking aim at the Carolinas.

While forecasters have been keeping a close eye on the storm from the ground, the International Space Station watched the slow-moving hurricane make landfall from above.

With the brunt of the storm yet to come, a gauge on the Neuse River in New Bern, a city near the coast, was already recording 10 feet (3 meters) of inundation, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

Thousands of people have taken temporary shelter in converted schools and community centers, while those who have ignored orders have been warned that rescuers will not be able to reach them at the height of the storm.

"Don't relax. Don't get complacent", he'd said Thursday morning.

Allison James, who lives at Huntersville, Mecklenburg County in North Carolina, says based on reports this area would not be directly affected. "I should stay in my house, where I have water and food".
