India cancels talks with Pakistan

The Congress on Friday sought to take credit for the government's decision to call off the meeting between External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

India announced on Thursday that it has accepted Pakistan's proposal for a meeting between the Indian and Pakistani foreign ministers, even as New Delhi insisted that that the encounter should not interpreted as the start of a dialogue process. "Building on the mutual desire for peace between our two countries, I wish to propose a meeting between Foreign Minister Qureshi and External Affairs Minister Swaraj, before the informal meeting of the SAARC Foreign Ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in NY", he said in the letter, seeking resumption of the dialogue process started by his predecessor Nawaz Sharif.

According to media reports, India cancelled the meeting over killing of its three policemen in Indian occupied Kashmir and release of postal stamps glorifying martyred Kashmiri leader Burhan Wani.

Breaking the ice in ties with Pakistan, India on Thursday agreed for a meeting between Foreign Ministers of the two countries in NY later this month but rejected the request for the holding of a South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit in Islamabad, holding that terror and talks can not go together. However, the ministry had said this would be is "just a meeting" and did not imply a resumption of dialogue between the two countries.

However, the government has made it clear that the meeting between the foreign ministers is "just chat, not dialogue".

Afterwards, Modi told Khan that India was ready for a "new era" of ties with Pakistan and called for crafting collective strategy for combating regional challenges. "The elections in India are near and it appears that internal politics have influenced the government".

But after the terrorist attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir on 18 September that year, India expressed its inability to participate in the summit due to "prevailing circumstances" and stepped up diplomatic pressure on Pakistan.

A statement released on Friday by the Indian foreign ministry said the cancellation of talks followed the "latest brutal killings of our security personnel by Pakistan-based entities and the recent release of a series of twenty postage stamps by Pakistan glorifying a terrorist and terrorism".

India retaliated by carrying out "surgical strikes" in September 2016 across the Line of Control (LoC).

Since then, India had stated that "terror and talks can not go together". The Permanent Missions of both India and Pakistan will together work out the details.
