Kavanaugh confirmation fight rallies Democrats to resistance

The emails made public on Thursday dated from Kavanaugh's service in the White House under Republican President George W. Bush more than a decade ago.

Judge Kavanaugh understands the simple truth that most people in our nation has forgotten, The Supreme Court of The United States does not make the law.

Bennet, a Democrat and Colorado's senior senator, released a statement via Twitter on Tuesday morning saying the nominee will threaten women's right to abortions and make decisions that would end up causing harm to the environment.

Still, Kavanaugh revealed a few things about himself, professionally and personally.

"If you folks are wondering why we're talking about Kavanaugh all the time, if somebody came here to talk about tariffs, somebody came here to talk about budgets, somebody came here to talk about something else, raise your hand", he said. "I'm confident he'll be confirmed", McConnell told reporters in Louisville, Ky., adding that he believes Kavanaugh did a "spectacular job" during his hearing before the Judiciary Committee last week.

Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin of IL put the focus on Trump, who Durbin said, "has shown contempt for the federal judiciary and has shown disrespect for the rule of law over and over again".

Since January, Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii has asked every nominee, including those up for judicial positions, if they've ever sexually harassed or assaulted anyone. Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey took turns aggressively questioning Kavanaugh in what many saw as a prelude to presidential primary campaigns. Republican John Cornyn of Texas warned him that senators could be expelled for violating confidentially rules. Charles Grassley, R-Ill., and release the 141,000 pages of documents from Kavanaugh's record that are not permitted for public release or discussion without being cleared by committee staff.

In written testimony submitted before Friday's Senate confirmation hearing, Dean predicts that with Brett Kavanaugh on the high court, it will become "a weak check, at best, on presidential power".
