Kerala MLA calls nun who accused bishop of rape a prostitute

Poonjar MLA PC George on Saturday triggered a huge controversy after he made a derogatory remark against the nun who has accused a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church of allegedly raping her. "I am ashamed of such lawmakers who are giving these statements instead of helping women". Coming to the conclusion of the case all by himself, the MLA said that no one has doubt that nun is a prostitute.

Unlike the rest of India, where Christianity remains a minority religion practiced by just 2.3% of the total population, Kerala is home to a sizable Christian community that dates back hundreds of years. On the basis of her complaint, the Kuravilangad police registered Crime No. 746 of 2018 of Kuruvilangad Police for offences punishable under Sections 342, 376 (2)(k) and (n), 377, and 506 (I) IPC. Police have questioned him on August 13 but failed to arrest him and to any further probe in the matter. However, their move did attract some strong criticism as The Missionaries of Jesus congregation, to which the nuns belong, on September 10 condemned the protest by the five nuns. "Twelve times she enjoyed it and the 13th time it is rape? Now, we pin our hopes on the judiciary", said a nun who did not want to be named, UCAN news reports. Acting like a judge, George said that at first, he thought that the Bishop is despicable but after going through the case he realised that it was the nun who is creating trouble. The police recorded her statements several times. Then in the same week itself, Bishop Franco made a special visit to this community and stayed there overnight.

Anapura noted that Mulakkal has been targeting her group since they declared support for his accuser, saying the bishop is "trying to coerce a statement against the survivor from us".

Kerala nuns took to the streets in Kochi on Saturday. It was also pointed out that a nun, who was a witness in the case, had received threats to life, and no steps were taken by the police to afford witness protection, despite a specific request to that effect.

He added that no other nun had filed evidence against the bishop and that there was not of yet any scientific evidence to substantiate the rape charges.

Earlier, it was revealed that the accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal committed unnatural offence and committed rape repeatedly on the nun against her will.
