McDonald’s announces major changes to its classic burgers

To make the change, artificial preservatives were removed from McDonald's real American Cheese, Big Mac Special Sauce, the regular bun, the Quarter Pounder bun and the Big Mac Bun. Even the Big Mac Special Sauce is getting a makeover.

'In Australia, we're taking steps to remove artificial colours, flavours and preservatives from our menu wherever possible, ' a McDonald's spokesperson said. The change affects almost every part of the sandwich, including the bun, cheese, and sauce.

Going towards a more "health conscious" route, they will be removing preservatives from the ingredients in their burgers (buns, sauces, but not pickles).

Under Chief Executive Steve Easterbrook, McDonald's has improved its financial performance after years of stagnation, when critics said the chain's menu lost its appeal to younger consumers.

But one thing that isn't changing? "We know quality choices are important to our customers, and this latest positive change to our classic burgers demonstrates our committed journey to leading with the customer and building a better McDonald's".

McDonald's most-recent cleanup took more than a year, and more changes are likely based on where suppliers are able to do more, Kempczinski said.

The company did go on to clarify that the pickles do still have an artificial preservative, but that customers are more than welcome to request that not be included with their meal. It hasn't set a timeline for removing those ingredients.

"From switching to 100% fresh beef in our quarter-pound burgers, cooked right when ordered, to removing artificial preservatives in our Chicken McNuggets, and committing to cage-free eggs by 2025, we have made significant strides in evolving the quality of our food", said Chris Kempczinski, the company's United States of America president.
