A National Weather Service forecaster in Wilmington, North Carolina, said: 'This will likely be the storm of a lifetime for portions of the Carolina coast.

More than 1 million people are under mandatory evacuations in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia because of Florence, a Category 4 storm with winds of 130 miles per hour.

Each storm is clearly highlighted on the map and identified with a name, showing that Hurricane Florence is not the only storm threatening to ravage civilians.

Weather conditions are now projected to slow down Florence enough that landfall won't occur until early Saturday morning. Forecasters warn that millions could be affected by the hurricane.

Wind speeds of unsafe Hurricane Florence decreased slightly Wednesday afternoon to 120 miles per hour according to the 5 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. Hurricane Florence is making its way to the US East Coast. There are concerns that it could knock out power for weeks.

People fleeing coastal North and SC clogged highways early Wednesday as Florence bore down on the coast for a direct hit in a low-lying region dense with beachfront vacation homes.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has ordered the mandatory evacuation of one million coastal residents while neighboring North Carolina ordered an evacuation of the Outer Banks, barrier islands that are a popular tourist destination, and parts of coastal Dare County.

While people on the ground are preparing for floods, high winds and surging waves, the satellites and astronauts in orbit are looking down on the storm from above, and the views are startling.

"This morning I drove around for an hour looking for gas in Cary".

"We could get some rain and gusty winds".

"This rainfall would produce catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding", the hurricane center says.

But a computer simulation known as the European model predicts some places could get 45 inches.

Where we were: Last year's deadly hurricane season had plenty of economic impact, especially given the widespread damage in Houston.

"It does look a bit similar to Harvey in a sense that it goes roaring into shore and then comes to a screeching stop", said MIT meteorology professor and hurricane expert Kerry Emanuel.
