Porsche drops diesel in electric car push

Diesel is dead. At least, for Porsche it is.

"There won't be any more diesel cars from Porsche in the future", CEO Oliver Blume confirmed in an interview with Germany's Bild am Sonntag published Saturday.

Sports vehicle maker Porsche said Sunday it would become the first German auto giant to abandon the diesel engine, reacting to parent company Volkswagen's emissions cheating scandal and urban driving bans.

The German carmaker Porsche says it will stop making diesel cars, and concentrate on petrol, electric and hybrid engines instead.

With regulators now tightening emissions standards and placing extra scrutiny on diesel emissions in particular, Porsche has decided that it will no longer offer the engines.

Furthermore, Porsche never actually developed the diesel engines with the emissions cheating software.

"Porsche is not demonizing diesel".

In the USA, diesel-powered Cayennes first arrived in 2013 but were pulled after parent-company Volkswagen admitted that its engines cheated emissions tests.

"We as a sports auto manufacturer, however, for whom diesel has always played a secondary role, have come to the conclusion that we would like our future to be diesel-free".

The move by the German vehicle maker, which offered diesel options only in its family-focused Cayenne, Panamera and Macan models, follows a collapse in demand since 2015 when parent company Volkswagen was caught installing so-called "defeat devices" to dupe emissions tests. "Still, Porsche's image has suffered".

In its press release, Porsche touted the introduction of the Taycan, the brand's first all-electric model that will compete with Tesla in the luxury EV market.

The company's first diesel vehicle was sold just 10 years ago.

Diesel cars over a certain age have been banned in parts of some German cities in a bid to cut pollution.

"It is important for us that engines can be driven in a sporty way", Blume told the newspaper.
