Stewart, Storm surge past Mystics 98-82 for WNBA title

This was inside EagleBank Arena, a college basketball arena that hosted the WNBA Finals where the Storm won its third league championship.

In Game 1, Washington had no shot as Seattle asserted their dominance. After eliminating Phoenix in a thrilling five-game series in the 2018 WNBA Semifinals, the Storm collected two triumphs in the Emerald City against Washington (89-76 on September 7; 75-73 on September 9) before defeating the Mystics on Wednesday to complete the sweep. The Storm outshot the Mystics in all three games.

Back in their offices at Capital One Arena on Thursday morning, the Washington Mystics went about the quotidian details of breakdown day before disbanding for the offseason.

Seattle overcame an early deficit to lead 20-16 after the first quarter.

As bedlam burst and champagne poured, Breanna Stewart stood tall inside the cramped, plastic-lined visitor's locker room and allowed herself a smile of gratification. All the best to the 32-year old.

After trailing 69-53 entering the fourth quarter, the Mystics rallied to within five points at 72-67 on a 3-pointer by Tierra Ruffin-Pratt with 6:49 remaining. Unfortunately for the home team, Seattle immediately responded with an 8-0 run and coasted the rest of the way. The now WNBA champions won the battle of the boards, 39-28, and shot a ridiculous 13-for-26 from beyond the arc.

"They are crushing it right now", said Zarker Primomo.

The Mystics showed this year they can put it all together. Vandersloot is making her All-WNBA debut.

"I mean, it was different", Delle Donne acknowledged. "But we got better throughout the year". "To do it with this group, the way we did it, I don't even know how to react". I get that. But I can't help but hear something else, too: "They're forgetting about the Storm". "I felt more and more uncomfortable as we kept going". I've been having a hard time putting it all into words. We'd like to have taken that one last step, but the window for us is open right now.

The coach's first priority was speaking with the team's young players, who will leave within a week to prepare for their seasons in overseas professional leagues.

"It's each one of them, to a player, starting with Sue Bird, but every single player is why we're here", Valavanis told Rowe.

"We don't feel like we peaked and this is it for us", Elena Delle Donne said. "We have seen so much growth in our fanbase in the last two years", Delle Donne said.

"We've come a long way", he said. We feel like we've got a lot of young, great talent, and obviously this isn't how we wanted it to end, but it's an experience that we can grow from.

He continued, "You've got two great teams going against each other". She was the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Final Four in all four of her college years. "And so we will".

FRESH KICKS: Bird appears to be poking fun at herself for being the oldest player in the WNBA with shoes she had designed for Game 1 of the Finals. "Best feeling in the world".

EDD: "Yeah, there's been a huge transformation in the culture of this team. I know she made me a better coach". "I didn't coach her on the U-17 team in 2010 but I saw her". I didn't know (Toliver's' favorite) beer.

KT: "Quit telling the secrets". She detailed little moments along the way of their 2018 season, the things she said she will miss most this fall and winter when everyone goes their separate ways.
