Williams baffled by coach's claim he sent her US Open final signals

Speaking about her angry outburst earlier this month, Williams maintained in an interview on Network Ten that she was not being coached during the match, which she lost to Japan's Naomi Osaka, despite her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, subsequently acknowledging he was trying to send Williams a signal.

The former world number one lost in straight sets to Naomi Osaka in a weird final, where she received three code violations and was penalised a game.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion was given a code violation by umpire Carlos Ramos after Mouratoglou was caught sending signals from the sidelines - something which is banned in professional tennis - during the second game of the second set.

Williams responded by telling Ramos she would rather lose than cheat.

Wilkinson told her panellists on The Project that, point blank, Williams' publicist warned that if she asked about the controversial Herald Sun cartoon then the tennis champ would end the interview right there and then. We've never had signals. "In retrospect, do you think that makes the violation warranted?" "Like, and he said he made a motion, so I was like, 'OK, so you made a motion, now you told people that you're coaching me?'"

"I was on the other side, I didn't see the motion, so it was just a really confusing moment", she said.

"I think overall it was just a really unfortunate experience".

"Because the young player outplayed her in the first set, I think pressure got her more than anything". Wilkinson revealed they'll also discuss how hard it was for her return to tennis just six months after the birth of daughter Alexis previous year, and her much-discussed friendship with Meghan Markle.

While Williams has firmly and consistently denied any allegations that coaching took place during the final, her own coach has remarkably opposed this view, claiming that he was giving her instructions throughout the match. You stole a point from me. For many women, especially women of color, it was clear that Williams' protestation was not some hysterical, testosterone-filled verbal tirade typical of her male counterparts.

"We should not let her record, as glowing as it is, overshadow the fact that on this day, in this match Williams was wrong", Ings wrote in The Sydney Morning Herald. You know, I was like "It's okay. but, like, don't, yeah."' Serena trailed off.

In the moments after Serena Williams lashed out at the U.S. Open chair umpire earlier this month and pleaded with the NY crowd to applaud the champion, she found comfort in motherhood.

"I felt like we were literally watching history", Williams said about Markle and Prince Harry's nuptials. "Sash [Osaka's coach Sascha Bajin] was coaching as well".
