Afghan election candidate killed by bomb under office chair

Governor Zalmai Wesa and powerful police commander of the southern Afghan province of Kandahar Abdul Razeq were killed in a shooting inside the governor's compound on Thursday the Associated Press reported.

The latest attack takes the number of election candidates killed to at least 10.

The governor and the local head of the NDS intelligence service were wounded.

At least two USA soldiers were reported wounded in the incident, but Miller was said to be unhurt, according to the officials.

One of Afghanistan's most powerful security officials and the Kandahar governor were killed in a shooting shortly after a visit by the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, in an attack likely to shake the confidence of the government ahead of elections. Two Americans were injured in the incident at the compound, a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spokesperson said, and a local cameraman was reportedly killed.

"There was a situation at the Kandahar palace today".

Afghan officials said the assault began as attendees were leaving the complex. "2 Americans wounded. Gen. Miller uninjured, attacker reportedly dead", Operation Resolute Support, the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, said in a tweet.

Seven people were injured in the attack, which has been claimed by the Taliban. "We are being told the area is secure".

"Raziq is basically the glue that has kept security forces in southern Afghanistan together", Bill Roggio, a senior fellow at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies and editor of the Long War Journal, told Military Times. Bagram is located about 40 kilometers from Kabul and is the site of a sprawling USA military base.

He was accused of abuses, including torturing Taliban inmates, but had brought reasonable security in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban militants.

On July 1, the Afghan Sikh and Hindu community leader, Ottar Singh Khalsa, who was running for parliamentary elections, was killed in a suicide attack in Jalalabad city in Nangarhar province.

The flamboyant commander, he had survived several attempts on his life over many years and narrowly escaped an attack last year in which five diplomats from the United Arab Emirates were killed in Kandahar.
