Chance the Rapper not running for Chicago mayor; endorses Amara Enyia

Chicago-based emcee Chance the Rapper, aka Chancelor Bennett, announced his endorsement in the Chicago mayoral race on Tuesday in a press conference at Chicago's City Hall. The rapper pulled up to City Hall to make the announcement while welcoming Eniya with a big hug after he introduced her as the person he's backing.

When prompted to explain why he endorsed Enyia, he shared a common vision for the future of the third-largest city in America.

The tweet came right behind a "Maybe I should", post, teasing the press and raising speculation about a possible bid for the fifth floor of City Hall. Notably, Chance told Ebony previous year that he'd never run for office, but these things tend to change. A lawyer and community activist with a Ph.D.in education policy who serves as the head of Austin's Chamber of Commerce, Enyia briefly entered the 2015 mayoral race before dropping out.

"I would like to say very narcissistically if I back you, you have a chance, absolutely", Chance said. "They screamin" "Chano for mayor.' " Naturally, some of his 8 million followers took the message as a hint that he was about to get in the race to replace Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who is not seeking reelection. "I probably won't ever be running for mayor of this city".

Previous year he donated $1 million to Chicago Public Schools and raised another $2 million six months later.

While his direct move is to endorse and support Enyia, Chance's larger mission is getting out the youth vote, claiming, "We will see the largest 18-to-25 voter turnout in Chicago's history". Bennett has endorsed Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle for mayor.
