Former NFL star released from jail after 18 years

Rae Carruth - the piece of garbage National Football League star WR who hired a hitman to kill his pregnant girlfriend - was released from prison Monday morning, 19 years after the deadly incident.

"At the time, Rae was hanging out with people he should not have been hanging out with", Rudolf said. A friend of Carruth's named Michael Kennedy - who drove a third auto behind Carruth and Adams - as well as a passenger in that vehicle, Stanley Abraham, have since been released from prison, according to the Observer.

The court at the time heard how Carruth used his auto to block Adams escape route. Rae was officially released from prison on Oct 22, after serving a 18-year sentence for his crime. She had been driving down Rea Road, following the former Panthers player home from the movies.

Cherica Adams was 7 months pregnant with #CarolinaPanthers receiver Rae Carruth's son when she was murdered by a hitman, Van Brett Watkins.

Chancellor Lee Adams and his grandmother Saundra Adams at Freedom Park in Charlotte in early November past year.

In March, Carruth reneged on a pledge to reconnect with his now 18-year-old son, Chancellor Lee Adams - who was born with cerebral palsy - upon his release from prison because leaving him alone is in "everyone's best interest", he told the Charlotte Observer.

Carruth still claims he wasn't intending to have Adams killed, but has acknowledged a responsibility for what happened to his former girlfriend. Carruth earned a barber's certificate while in prison and has said he plans to return to his home state of California upon his release.

"He's matured", Rudolf said.

"If I could change anything, I'd change the whole situation", Carruth wrote in the letter, obtained by WBTV.

He also said that he wants to know his son - a step Saundra Adams, Chancellor's grandmother, has made clear in media interviews she's not ready to take. "His mother would still be here and I wouldn't be where I'm at". But I do want him to...see and feel the effects of what he did.

'I don't want to harm Ms. Adams.

"For all involved or invested in this ordeal, please calm down", Carruth wrote to the newspaper. "I will no longer be pursuing a relationship with Chancellor and Ms. Adams". I want him to see that too'.

That's a far cry from the four-year, $3.7 million contract Carruth signed with the Panthers after being drafted - although he never collected all of that money since he was released in the third year of his deal.

Wherever Rae lives, he will occasionally have to meet with authorities for the next nine months, as part of his release requirements.
