The Red Sox opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, with Andrew Benintendi and Rafael Devers hitting RBI singles off of a shaky Gerrit Cole.

Within the crooked numbers lurked a lower-case win in the Red Sox' 7-5 victory. The Astros returned the salvo in the top of the second against David Price as George Springer fisted a double that just barely stayed fair down the right field line to plate two runs to tie the game.

For starters, the Astros had to lose a postseason game for the first time this fall, and lose a game at Fenway Park for just the fourth time in 11 games dating to the start of 2017.

"If it's baby steps", he said of Sunday's outing, "it's baby steps".

A team he pitched for won a playoff game in which he started for the first time.

"No, no, he started feeling bad after the game", Cora said. "So if it's baby steps, it's baby steps". The Red Sox haven't yet named a starter but the Astros will go with Dallas Keuchel.

"You can ask any of my teammates or coaches the last 10 years, all I want to do is win", said Price. "But I came here to win, period". To win a World Series and do it multiple times. And that's what I'm about.

"I put myself aside". This isn't about me. I get that. I deserve those narratives. But this is bigger than David Price.

The Red Sox peaked with a 25.1 rating at 9:45 p.m., during halftime of the Patriots' game. That brought Cora out of the dugout with the hook, and as Price handed over the ball and walked off the mound, the Fenway crowd mostly cheered in approval, numerous fans on their feet.

The Boston Red Sox say ace left-hander Chris Sale has a stomach illness and will spend the night in the hospital.

Kimbrel has had a rough postseason thus far, giving up a run in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Yankees followed by two more in Game 4.

"Overall his stuff was good", said Cora. "Command was good and he gave us a chance to win". Correa is fast, and he beat the throw. Unfortunately for Kimbrel, Springer poked a double to left field, then advanced to third base on a wild pitch while José Altuve batted.

There's nothing quite as deflating as not producing a shutdown inning at any point, but especially very early in a postseason game. Four of those Houston runs came on a pair of home runs allowed by Brandon Workman, who wouldn't have been pitching in the ninth inning had the previous eight innings gone differently. Coming into the game, Gonzalez was 2-for-11 in his career against Price.
