Kavanaugh asks questions in first day on bench

While Trump apologized on behalf of the nation for "the awful pain and suffering" Kavanaugh and his family had experienced and declared him "proven innocent", the new justice assured Americans that he would be fair and was taking the job with "no bitterness".

Before hearing arguments on Tuesday, the justices turned aside appeals of a 2017 ruling authored by Mr Kavanaugh on the lower court that struck down a 2015 environmental rule imposed under former President Barack Obama regulating a potent greenhouse gas linked to climate change.

Within a half hour of the start of his first oral argument on the Supreme Court Tuesday, Kavanaugh had already proved he wouldn't be a silent presence on the bench like Justice Clarence Thomas, who went through a similarly bruising confirmation process in 1991 but was famously quiet during questioning. Kavanaugh officially became a member of the high court Saturday. With courtroom security tight, there were no disruptions by protesters during the arguments, as there had been during Kavanaugh's confirmation hearings.

"It is not something we are eager to do", Nadler told the Times.

Protesters held signs that said, "We will not forget" and "We do not consent", following the acrimonious fight that culminated in Kavanaugh's 50-48 confirmation by the Senate on Saturday.

Consider, for example, the responses to questions about how President Trump's doing in his job or whether Kavanaugh should have been confirmed.

His confirmation to the lifetime job was a victory for Trump and locked in a conservative majority on the court. In the first, he asked five questions of lawyers from both sides of the issue, but did not inject any personal opinions or hint at how he might vote. Next to him will be Justice Elena Kagan, who hired him to teach at Harvard Law when she served as dean.

Ahead of the U.S. mid-term elections, Mr Trump added: "I think you're going to see a lot of things happen on 6 November that would not have happened before".

The cases challenge the types of crimes that qualify as violent felonies under that law and can lead to 15-year mandatory minimum sentences for a defendant. It wasn't as entertaining as a question from Roberts, who described grasping some cash and asking his clerks to pull it from his hand as a kind of impromptu test of a criminal law definition. "My focus now is to be the best justice I can be". The new justice's four clerks all are women, the first time that has happened. Kavanaugh was a judge on the D.C. Circuit for 12 years. Jackson also worked for Kavanaugh on the appeals court. He will take notes for the justices when they meet for private conferences.

Kavanaugh is expected to push the court further to the right as he is replacing Kennedy, a conservative who sometimes voted with the liberal justices on key social issues including in cases involving abortion and gay rights. The FBI probe into the allegations against Kavanaugh reportedly found no corroboration of the allegations against him but was criticized by Democrats for not being a full investigation.

He later expressed regret over some of his comments. The president also falsely asserted that Kavanaugh was "proven innocent".
