Major 7.0-magnitude quake hits Papua New Guinea: USGS

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said waves about 0.3m high could be expected on coastlines in Papua New Guinea and neighbouring Solomon Islands.

A magnitude 6.0 natural disaster has struck just off the coast of Indonesia, a country reeling from an quake and tsunami last month that killed more than 2000 people.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre oceanographer David Walsh earlier said any tsunami from the natural disaster would only affect areas immediately around the epicentre.

The original quake's center was recorded around 77 miles east of Kimbe, a town in New Britain, Papua New Guinea, which has a population of just over 27,000.

"It's still too early to determine whether there is a possible tsunami threat to Hawaii".

He added there was no damage in Rabaul, but officers were still waiting to hear from villages closer to the epicentre.

Australia's Tsunami Warning Centre said its coastlines were not at risk.

"A tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific located closer to the natural disaster", the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin.

Earlier on Thursday, a magnitude 6.0 quake struck just off the popular island of Bali, where the International Monetary Fund and its sister lending organization, the World Bank, are holding annual meetings through Sunday. It was followed by aftershocks of magnitude 5.7 and 5.9.

A tsunami threat was triggered along the island's coasts.

The earthquake's tremors were felt as far as the holiday island of Bali, where locals and tourists were woken up by the sensation.

The country is is still recovering from a magnitude-7.5 quake that hit around 900km to the west, which killed at least 100 people last February.

PNG sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a hotspot for seismic activity due to friction between tectonic plates.

Indonesian authorities said at least three people were killed and four injured in the quake. Officials say more than 80,000 people are living in temporary shelters or otherwise displaced.
