Melania Trump : 'Smoke-filled' plane forced to land

A CNN reporter aboard the flight says Secret Service handed the press corps wet towels to put over their faces to deal with the smell of smoke.

Smoke began to fill the plane, and journalists on board reported a burning smell growing stronger.

The First Lady is still expected to make the trip after a new plane is found, according to reports.

A plane carrying US First Lady Melania Trump was forced to turn around and land after the cabin filled with smoke.

It was not immediately clear what caused the problem on the aircraft, a Boeing C-32A identified as "Bright Star".

Reporters were told the plane suffered a "minor mechanical issue", that one crew member sid stemmed from a "malfunctioning comms unit", although the White House has yet to confirm the source of the issue.

The first lady landed safely back at the base at around 9am local time (2pm BST).

Mrs Trump's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said "everyone is fine and everyone is safe" following the incident.

Trump was on her way to the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia to meet with families affected by neonatal abstinence syndrome.
