Michael expected to hit Florida as a hurricane midweek

Chris Holcomb and the 11Alive Storm Trackers team will have full coverage all week of Tropical Hurricane Michael and bring you full details on what sort of effects it will have on our weather in and across the state of Georgia. By 5 p.m., winds had reached maximum sustained speeds about 50 miles per hour.

Michael will move across the eastern Gulf of Mexico through Tuesday night.

Tropical Storm Michael's impacts could be similar to what was seen during Hurricane Hermine, when 80 percent of Tallahassee lost power.

Besides the hurricane watch, a tropical storm watch is in effect from the Suwannee River to Anna Maria Island, including Tampa Bay, as well as from the Alabama-Florida border to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

Known as "Potential Tropical Cyclone 14" by the National Hurricane Center, the storm is expected to form in the northwestern Caribbean Sea this weekend, with heavy rains heading for western Cuba.

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch from the Alabama-Florida border eastward to the Suwanee River, where Michael could roll ashore on Wednesday. Tuesday and Wednesday will bring more of a southerly push to the winds, staying in the same 10-20mph range through much of the day. But within hours Sunday it had gained more punch and its top sustained winds clocked in at 60 mph (95 kph) by late Sunday evening.

An intensifying storm system that became Tropical Storm Michael Sunday afternoon is setting its sights on the northern Gulf Coast, and forecasters say it could be a Category 2 hurricane when it makes landfall.

The depression is moving toward the north near 3 miles per hour.

Early Monday afternoon, Michael was centered about 20 miles off the western tip of Cuba and about 600 miles south of Tallahassee, Florida. This could lead to life-threatening flash flooding in some areas.

Scott had already announced Sunday morning he would declare a state of emergency due to the storm.

One is located several hundred miles south of the Cabo Verde Islands and has a 30 percent chance of development in the next five days.

Computer models continue to show Michael on a path toward the Florida Panhandle, where it could make landfall as a Category 2 storm.

Chatham Emergency Management Agency has entered OPCON 4 and is monitoring Tropical Storm Michael.

Florida's capital city of Tallahassee, which is in the Panhandle, opened two locations Sunday where residents could get sandbags to prepare for flooding.
