Paddington station suffers major disruption after overhead wires damaged

Some passengers were stranded on trains between Paddington - the country's seventh busiest station -...

"Customers should travel from London Waterloo or London Marylebone instead, with tickets are being accepted on South Western Railway, Chiltern Railways, Virgin Trains, West Midlands Railway and Transport for Wales".

Two of the four lines from Slough to Paddington may open this afternoon.

"There will be no London commuter services and a reduced long-distance service timetable with trains starting from and terminating at Reading". The train was not in passenger service.

Trains began running again around midday, but rail operators Great Western Railway, TfL Rail and Heathrow Express insisted services would be "limited" for the rest of the day.

However those alternative stations might not be that easy to get to either.

Travellers at Paddington station have been hit by a major disruption this morning, with cancellations expected throughout the day.

The state-of-the-art train, operated by the government contractor Hitachi, was on a test run when it caused extensive damage to 500 metres of overhead lines last night.

A spokesman said: "After years of successful testing on the route we are taking today very seriously, a full and thorough investigation is taking place to identify the cause".

Commuters may also face disruption next week when SWR train workers go on strike for five days.
