Possible extension to UK's Brexit transition period talked up by Ireland

The US Trade Representative's office wrote to Congress yesterday to say it plans to start negotiations "as soon as it is ready" after Brexit Day on March 29, in news that will provide a welcome boost to Theresa May.

The two sides are now proposing an implementation period from 30 March 2019 until 31 December 2020.

Not all Conservative MPs have woken up on Thursday morning furious with the prime minister, however.

With the offer on the table, Europe is seeking to put pressure on May to come to Brussels with ideas of her own.

He said the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, would update leaders on the preparedness for all scenarios including no deal. Her so-called Chequers plan has already been rejected both by the European Union and her own party and the prime minister has not even begun the process of spelling out which of the alternative available options she is willing to accept.

The choreography of Wednesday's summit opening emphasises British isolation.

The concession, delivered to European Union leaders at a dinner in Brussels last night, means that Britain may not fully leave the auspices of the European Union until nearly six years after the European Union referendum, while potentially putting billions of pounds more into European Union budgets.

Máirtin Ó Muilleoir, a Sinn Féin MLA, said that the DUP's efforts to thwart Mrs May in striking a Brexit deal that would ensure a free-flowing trade and regulatory border should be resisted.

With the talks stalled and little prospect of a quickening of pace, many Brexit supporters and critics of Britain's departure are airing their frustration over an exit which some campaigners had said would be an easy deal.

Without a solution, the entire divorce deal is at risk, setting Britain on track for an unregulated Brexit that would likely bring chaos and economic pain to both sides. But the problem is we can not have a border in Ireland between the Republic and the province [of Northern Ireland].

"But if these potential gains are sacrificed because of European Union bullying and the Government's desperation to secure a deal, the British people will not forgive us".

Back in Brussels, a stern Tusk said he had "no grounds for optimism" based on a report Tuesday from Barnier and May's appearance in parliament on Monday.

As he arrived for the Brussels meeting, the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier had said "we need time, we need much more time" for talks, vowing to work "calmly and patiently" for a deal in the coming weeks.

The prime minister tells the BBC the extension would only be a "matter of months" and insists she hopes it won't be needed.

The spokesman said: 'We want to secure a deal as quickly as possible.

She told reporters that "most of the issues" in the withdrawal agreement have been resolved - apart from the Irish border.

The extension idea has angered pro-Brexit U.K. politicians, who see it as an attempt to bind Britain to the bloc indefinitely.

"She said we will keep under consideration the issue of the transition period but she did not say anything in favour or against the three-year period". She is hemmed in by pro-Brexit members of her Conservative Party, who oppose any more compromises with the bloc, and by her parliamentary allies in Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, who insist a solution can't include customs checks between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom. The terms of that, including whether Britain would have an independent trade policy, could only be agreed after Britain has left.
