Premier Inn unveils no frills £19-a-night pod rooms

It will consist of pod-style rooms less than half the size of a standard Premier Inn room, at 8.5 square metres.

Called Zip by Premier Inn, it will launch in Cardiff early next year and stays will start from £19 per night.

They are to offer twin single beds that can be pushed together to make a double bed, air conditioning, a TV and WiFi.

He said the research showed that customers were "happy to compromise on location or some extras if they are paying a fantastic price for their room".

The first Zip hotel will open in Cardiff in March 2019 "with more coming soon".

Whitbread said the smaller room format would allow it to use a wider range of buildings in towns and cities across the UK.

The rooms have been created by PriestmanGoode, the design consultancy behind first-class cabins for Air France, Lufthansa and Swiss airlines.

Six rooms on the ground floor will be wheelchair accessible, with "en-suite wet rooms with grab rails, emergency pull cords and more space to manoeuvre".

Chief executive, Alison Brittain, said the spin-off hotel chain will cater for the "ultra-price-sensitive customer looking to zip in and out".

Richard Clarke, an analyst at Bernstein, floated the idea that Zip might be the starting point for pushing the Premier Inn brand upmarket.

In April, Whitbread said it would spin off its Costa coffee chain in the wake of pressure from activist investors, before revealing a shock £3.9bn sale of the chain to Coca-Cola at the end of August.

The company has almost 800 Premier Inn hotels, including some in Germany.

Hub is described as "design-led", with 11 sq m rooms that cost more than the £57 average for the main chain.

Some rooms will also have "small windows", while others will have "lightboxes".

United Kingdom hospitality company Whitbread has added a new budget brand to its hotel portfolio: Zip by Premier Inn.
