Querrey, Fritz both win in straight sets at Shanghai Masters

Nick Kyrgios's effort is under the microscope again after an umpire suggested a point during his first-round Shanghai Masters defeat was "really borderline".

The 33-year-old Swiss star, who has had injury problems, was defeated by 13th seed Borna Coric. Dumusois then underlined to Kyrgios what he exactly meant: "You know exactly what I meant, Nick".

"I think it's really up to him where he wants to go and what his potential really holds", the 20-time Grand Slam victor said.

Kyrgios, who this week lost his status as Australia's number one to 33rd-ranked Alex de Minaur, has a chequered history in Shanghai.

Only through understanding work ethic and scheduling, creating the right team around himself, only then can you unlock the potential really.

.

Kyrgios was fined after he stormed off mid-way through his first-round exit in the event previous year, while in 2016 he argued with spectators and was accused of giving away points in another defeat.

The Australian, who is ranked 38th in the world, responded by saying he did not care, before adding: "You have no right to tell me it's poor".

The Shanghai Masters has been a particularly unhappy hunting ground for Kyrgios over the years, with this being the fourth year in a row that he has stoked controversy at the competition.

"But there is still a process in place that he needs to do like any other player needs to go through in order to be successful".

He lost to Matthew Ebden 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

A 22-time grand slam champion - in double and mixed doubles - and former Davis Cup coach, Woodbridge said Kyrgios should next year try to focus his energies on the majors. "There's a way of playing tennis on a tennis court".

He said Kyrgios looked "tired and jaded" at this stage in the season and that brings out the worst in him.

Woodbridge's comments come after Kyrgios's prolonged exchange with the chair umpire at the Shanghai Masters during his first round defeat to American qualifier Bradley Klahn.

"When I get aced ... very poor, like it's poor behaviour".
