Saudi source denies journalist Khashoggi was killed at consulate in Istanbul

President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan have joined the ranks of USA officials raising concerns about the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump, whose first overseas trip as USA president was to the kingdom and whose son-in-law Jared Kushner has close ties to Prince Mohammed, said Tuesday he had not yet talked to the Saudis about Khashoggi, "but I will be at some point".

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has previously said officials are welcome to conduct a search as there is nothing to hide. They also create a dilemma for the White House, as lawmakers moved Wednesday to force a showdown over U.S. values in foreign policy by triggering a human rights probe that could lead to sanctions. However, it has offered no evidence to support its claim he left the consulate and vanished, despite his fiancee waiting outside.

Also Sunday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called Khashoggi's disappearance "very, very upsetting", but would not confirm reports that he was killed at the consulate, the Post reported.

Erdogan said the Saudi consulate should have surveillance cameras and should be able to show the video of Khashoggi leaving the building.

"We will not spare any effort to locate him, just as we would if it were any other Saudi citizen", it said.

"At the moment there are certain people who arrived from Saudi Arabia". She says she never saw him re-emerge.

Leman Yurtsever, a protest organiser and board member of the Human Rights Association in Turkey, said on Tuesday that they gathered by the diplomatic mission to defend the rights and safety of journalists. Saudi officials had no immediate comment.

Erdogan was quoted by Turkish media on Thursday as telling journalists flying with him back home from a visit to Hungary that "we can not remain silent to such an incident".

"If the reports of Jamal's murder are true, it is a monstrous and unfathomable act", Fred Hiatt, director of The Post's editorial page, said in a statement in a story reported by the Post. "The free world deserves answers", Pence said in a tweet.

Turkish prosecutors are already investigating the disappearance of Khashoggi, who has written columns critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Jeremy Hunt has warned Saudi Arabia that "friendships depend on shared values" after questioning the country's ambassador over the disappearance of a journalist.

Turkish police were limited to footage from two street cameras that monitor the street outside the consulate after Saudi officials claimed that security cameras inside the consulate were not working at the time of last week's incident.

Meanwhile, harsh reactions and demands for accountability are pouring in from USA lawmakers of both parties, as well as from other Western governments such as the United Kingdom. Sen.

The U.N. human rights office said Khashoggi's disappearance is "of serious concern".

In 2016, Reporters Without Borders published information detailing how Saudi Arabia "manipulates foreign media outlets" in order to "project a positive image of the kingdom internationally".

Khashoggi maintained ties with Saudi elites, including those in its intelligence apparatus, and launched a satellite news channel, Al-Arab, from Bahrain in 2015 with the backing of Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.

Khashoggi, a self-exiled writer for The Washington Post, was reportedly visiting the consulate to acquire the papers to prove that he was divorced.
