South Korea eyes lifting of some sanctions against North Korea

The Trump administration maintains it's made good progress on getting North Korea to denuclearize despite no verifiable actions towards this taking place.

As for Japan's motive for hosting the planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the daily said Japan is likely seeking to avoid being kept from being involved in intensifying dialogue regarding the Korean Peninsula. "I just can't leave now".

During a rally in Kansas on Saturday, Trump touted his efforts to denuclearize North Korea, his success in convincing North Korea to return the remains of US troops killed during the Korean War, and his efforts to secure the release of hostages from North Korea earlier this year.

Kang Kyung-wha on Wednesday told lawmakers that the government is reviewing whether to lift sanctions South Korea imposed on the North in 2010 after a deadly attack on a warship that killed 45 South Korean sailors.

US President Donald Trump speaks at a signing ceremony with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un (not pictured) during their historic US-North Korea summit, at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore on June 12, 2018. Both leaders have publicly voiced support for another meeting.

Kang and Pompeo spoke by phone on September 17, a day before the three-day inter-Korean summit kicked off and soon after Seoul informed Washington of the military accord, a diplomatic source said. The gesture appears to have once again opened the doors to negotiations.

A move by South Korea to lift its unilateral sanctions would have little immediate effect since US -led worldwide sanctions remain in place.

Kim suggested that he will invite a US inspection team to verify the explosion that the North said disabled its Punggye-ri nuclear test site in May.

As part of his delegation to Pyongyang, Pompeo brought along Stephen Biegun, his special representative to North Korea and the diplomat expected to take on more of the day-to-day negotiating with Kim's regime.

South Korea is considering lifting some of its unilateral sanctions against North Korea to create more momentum for diplomacy aimed at improving relations and defusing the nuclear crisis, the South's foreign minister said Wednesday. It has not taken any steps to halt nuclear weapons or missile development.
