Stephen Hawking: AI could subdue humans with weapons

The famed author died earlier this year at the age of 76, leaving his final book unfinished.

Among Hawking's other important assertions and findings, sequences concerning extraterrestrial life and artificial intelligence will interest readers. But now his final book has been published, entitled "Brief Answers to the Big Questions", and one of the issues it takes up is the tech revolution and the dangers it poses to us in the future. After the scientist's death his book was not finished and had to be terminated by colleagues and family members who were connected with his personal Affairs. "No one directs the universe", he writes in "Brief Answers to the Big Questions".

"I am convinced that within this century, people will learn how to modify the intelligence and instincts such as aggression", wrote Hawking. "I believe the second", wrote Hawking.

Scientist Stephen Hawking of "Into The Universe With Stephen Hawking" speaks via satellite during the Science Channel portion of the 2010 Television Critics Association Press Tour at the Langham Hotel on January 14, 2010 in Pasadena, California. "We need to be wary of answering back until we have developed a bit further".

It has been completed by Hawking's family after his death, and features answers to several pertinent questions that were put to the physicist during his illustrious life.

And he leaves open the possibility of other phenomena.

He also believes humans will be capable of extraordinary space travel reaching "anywhere in the Solar System within the next hundred years".

His daughter Lucy says communication was so important to Hawking in his lifetime and we see this book as part of his legacy, bringing together his thoughts, humour, theories and writing into one attractive edition. I can say with confidence that their future will depend more on science and technology than any previous generation's has done, ' Hawking said. Lucy explained that her father often brought up "how we seem to have lost the ability to look outward, and we are increasingly looking inward to ourselves".

"No one created the universe and no one directs our fate", Professor Hawking revealed.

Acknowledging that science had yet to overcome major challenges for the world - including climate change, overpopulation, species extinction, deforestation and the degradation of the oceans - the physicist still urged young people "to look up at the stars and not down at your feet".
