Tway captures Safeway playoff for 1st career win

Kevin Tway edged out Ryan Moore and Brandt Snedeker on the third playoff hole.

Snedeker shot a two-over-par 74, Moore a 67 and Tway 71.

Tway rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt at the third hole of sudden death to win the first event of the USA tour's 2018-19 season over Ryan Moore at Silverado Resort in Napa, California.

The title was decided at the 10th, Tway carding a three on the par-4 for the win.

Snedeker appeared to have things on cruise control at the Safeway Open, torching the North Course at Silverado Resort & Spa en route to a three-shot lead entering the final round.

His father, Bob Tway, was an eight-time victor on the PGA Tour who captured the 1986 PGA Championship by sinking a bunker shot on the last hole to defeat Greg Norman. The birdie at the 18th put him in a five-way tie for fifth.

Snedeker was the first to be eliminated with an opening par, while Moore and Tway swapped birdies for the first two playoff holes.

"I'm really proud of the way I stepped up there and hit some quality shots when I needed to", Sneaker said. "Played a really good front nine in tough conditions and made the turn on the back nine and actually drove the ball really well".

Snedeker said he'd remember the event as one he "gave away". I was kind of right there, but kind of hanging around. The five-time major victor, who had been pleasantly surprised by his first two rounds after a tough 0-2 performance at the Ryder Cup in France last week, finished with three bogeys and three birdies, picking up a stroke at the 16th but unable to take advantage of the more favorable wind at 17 and 18.

Luke List jumped into that bunch with an eagle at 18 to cap his 67.
