United States of America backs Ecumenical Patriarch over Russian Federation dispute

The Orthodox Church in Ukraine has been under the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church since the late 1600s. "And we clearly understand the threats that exist in this connection", Poroshenko said at a conference on the implementation of a program to build housing for soldiers in Starychi in Lviv region on October 16.

The Russian Orthodox Church announced its decision on October 15, four days after the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, who is considered the leader of the worldwide Orthodox community, announced the decision to proceed to recognize Ukraine's request for an autocephalous church.

The religious split comes amid deep political tensions, with Ukraine opposing Russia's 2014 annexation of its Crimea peninsula and fighting a Moscow-backed uprising in its east in which more than 10,000 people have been killed.

The rupture on Monday came after the Istanbul-based clerics agreed to launch the process of recognising the independence of the Ukrainian Church, a move Russian Federation has long campaigned against.

The Russian Orthodox Church has cut ties with the Church leadership in Istanbul, the Constantinople Patriarchate traditionally regarded as the Orthodox faith's headquarters.

Orthodox parishes in Tajikistan is administratively subordinated to Dushanbinsky diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church (part of the Central Asian Metropolitan district) with the diocesan office in Dushanbe and there are six churches and prayer houses, which are five priests. He had previously asked the Patriarch of Constantinople to grant independence to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, The Associated Press reported.

Ukraine accuses the Russian Orthodox Church of wielding a pernicious influence on its soil, allowing itself to be used as a tool of the Kremlin to justify Russian expansionism and support of separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

After Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople said it was time to move towards granting autocephaly for the Ukrainian Church from Moscow, Serbia's Church leader accused him of promoting a schism.

The Moscow Patriarchate says its worshippers should no longer attend any services conducted by clergy loyal to Constantinople.

The Russian Church, meanwhile, has other problems, besides Ukraine, in Moldova.

And, he said, "the upbringing of youth in the Christian spirit is a project that we, the Orthodox, are willing to implement together with the Catholics".

The decision was a huge blow to Moscow's spiritual authority in the Orthodox world.

However Metropolitan Rostislav of the Orthodox Church in the Czech Lands and Slovakia wrote to Patriarch Kirill condemning "any attempt to legalise Ukrainian schismatics".
