Xiaomi Mi Box S bringing Android TV to USA buyers for $60

During Tuesday's Made by Google event, Xiaomi announced it will soon begin selling the Mi Box S in the US.

The smart TV streaming content box Mi Box was refreshed this week with the Mi Box S. This device comes from Xiaomi and delivers the newest in new Android TV software - Android TV 8.1. The result of which is there are very little differences inside and out between the original Mi Box and the new Mi Box S. The main box looks nearly identical to the original Mi Box made up of a small, black and generally nondescript piece of hardware with only the "Mi" branding visible on the front. The Box comes with a powerful processor that lets you play Android games as well which could be downloaded from the Google Play store. It is powered by a Cortex-A53 quad-core chipset with a Mali-450 GPU and has 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage.

The Mi Box S is up for pre-orders in the USA in a single Black colour option. Ports include 1 USB 2.0 port, 1 power interface, 1 HDMI 2.0a, and 1 audio out. You can also use the assistant to find a movie/show, ask it to play a song, or even ask it the weather.

If you already own the Mi Box, there really is no reason to buy the Mi Box S. However, those who don't already own an Android TV box should grab this not only because of the new design and remote but also because it's cheaper than the original. It looks like it has volume control as well, plus a dedicated Google Assistant button and all of your typical Android TV navigation keys. But the Android TV box market is now a sparse landscape with very few options available for consumers to choose from. It also supports Bluetooth 4.2 along with Wi-Fi 802.11ac for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidths.
