Women are also harder working.

Colorado voters chose Democratic US Representative Jared Polis to serve as their next governor, making him the first openly gay man to be elected to serve as the chief executive of a US state. BOSTON, MA - OCTOBER 01: Boston City Councilor and Democratic congressional candidate Ayanna Pressley speaks at a rally calling on Sen. The vast majority of women elected are Democrats.

Ocasio-Cortez' victory over Republican Anthony Pappas, an economics professor, had been widely expected since the Democratic primary in June, when she scored an unanticipated upset over 10-term U.S. Rep. Joe Crowley.

At least 99 women will represent Americans in the House, surpassing the previous record of 84. "The first role of women as military flyers was during World War II as Women Airforce Service Pilots, an organization disbanded after the war", Colonel McSally said.

Half a century ago this week, New York's Shirley Chisholm was elected the first black woman in Congress, and several of the black women elected Tuesday have said their campaigns were inspired by her example.

According to VoteCast, women voted considerably more in favour of their congressional Democratic candidate: About 6 in 10 voted for the Democrat, compared with 4 in 10 for the Republican.

Pressley said, "Now, listen, I know for a fact none of us ran to make history, we ran to make change". Stefanik was previously the youngest person ever elected, as she was 30 when she won her first campaign in 2014.

These new records represent the culmination of a record-setting year for female candidates.

In races still too close to call, Abrams, if elected, would become the first female African-American governor in US history, and in Arizona's competitive Senate race, the state will elect either Republican Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema as the state's first woman to serve in the chamber.

MI attorney Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar from Minnesota won their races handily to become the first Muslim women elected to Congress, with Omar being the first Somali-American to join the ranks.

Going into the midterm elections, 19 per cent of the Governor, Senate and House seats were held by women.

She will also be the nation's first Somali-American elected to Congress: She was born in Somalia and spent much of her childhood in a Kenyan refugee camp during Somalia's civil war.

■In Tennessee, Republican Marsha Blackburn will become that state's first woman senator.

In the Senate, female Democrats lost some important races. Democrat women flipped MI and Kansas, defeating male Republican incumbents.

Though a few months older than Ocasio-Cortez, Abby Finkenauer of Iowa, along with fellow candidate Cindy Axne, won a different distinction as the first women Iowa has ever sent to the House.
