At least 11 injured in shooting at Californian bar

The shooter was found dead inside, authorities said.

The first reports of shots fired at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks came in around 11:20 p.m. on a night the packed bar was hosting a special "College Country Night" event.

Dean said a mother recalled that the cops stood in front of her daughter to shield her from the gunfire. "It can happen anywhere".

The station said one person was seen - apparently lifeless - on the ground outside the bar's entrance.

The sheriff said the gunman has not been identified and there was no known motive for the shooting.

"We do not know at this time how many rounds were actually in the weapon or how many rounds the magazine could actually hold because it's still being processed as part of the evidence", Dean said.

Some mistook the gunfire for firecrackers when he began shooting, the New York Times reported.

A law enforcement officer said the suspect used a.45-caliber handgun, created to hold a magazine of 10 rounds. The gun was legally purchased, he added.

Authorities have identified the shooter and the handgun he used in the to kill 12 people. He was a 29-year veteran of the force looking to retire within the next year.

The sheriff also said there were six off-duty police officers from various agencies at the Borderline at the time of the attack.

"Ron ... gave his all and tonight, he died a hero because he went in to save lives", Dean said.

Officials have not released the names of all the victims as they worked to notify the families.

Some of the witnesses to the California student shooting at a country music bar were also survivors of the Las Vegas massacre a year ago, friends say. Once safely outside, the uninjured hugged and awaited word about those still inside.

Cody Coffman was killed during the shooting, his father Jason Coffman told reporters Thursday afternoon. The suspect was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served from 2008 to 2013.

It is believed that Long killed himself at the bar, Dean said. A handgun was recovered at the scene, which Dean says has not been examined in detail yet.

The police called in a team of mental health specialists who decided that Long did not qualify to be involuntarily detained for mental health evaluation under state law.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials were seen visiting a residence believed to be Long's in Newbury Park, California, which neighbors Thousand Oaks.

In a series of tweets, President Trump praised Helus and the "great bravery shown by police". A California Highway Patrol officer who was entering with him retreated, secured the perimeter, then pulled Helus out of the line of fire.

In addition to those who died, injured or wounded patrons were brought to hospitals or went to them on their own. God bless all of the victims and families of the victims. He described an incident - which seems to match the April episode mentioned by the sheriff - in which he called law enforcement to Long's house because it "sounded like he was tearing down the walls of the house, like somebody's just beating on the walls with a big hammer or something".
