Boeing Jet Crash-Lands At Guyana Airport, 6 Injured: Minister

Images posted on the airport's Facebook page and various sites showed the Fly Jamaica Airways plane appearing to have gone through a chainlink fence, with one of its engines tilted upward and resting on the fencing.

Guyana's public infrastructure minister, David Patterson, planned to provide a detailed report on the incident Friday.

"Fly (Jamaica) plane flight OJ 256, departing for Toronto just crashed landed at Timehri airport Guyana, everyone evacuated safely, I am all safe, but shaking up, we were in the air flying for 15 minutes and captain said there is a hydraulic problem, and turned the plane back to Timehri, captain dumped fuel and then landed".

Officials said that the injuries are non-life threatening, and those injured are being treated at Diamond Hospital.

The flight reportedly left Guyana at 2:10 am local time today and at 2:21 am, the pilot indicated an hydraulic problem, requesting permission to return.

The plane was carrying 120 passengers including two infants, plus eight crew members.

"Where the aircraft veered off is about the exact same place the Caribbean Airlines (plane did)... so fortunately for us on this occasion, the extension (of the runway) was there so they were able to utilise the extension", Patterson said, adding that investigations into the matter had already started.

This is the second Boeing aircraft to crash in two weeks.

Among those on board were 35 Guyanese, 82 Canadians, one American citizen, a Trinidadian and one Pakistani.

Fly Jamaica released a statement confirming that flight OJ256 "suffered an accident on landing". A spokesman said consular assistance would be available to those who needed it.

The plane touched down at 2.53am, when it overshot the runway.
