The Camp Fire, in Butte County, north of the state's capital, Sacramento, had burned through some 18,000 acres as of Thursday evening and was zero percent contained as officials scrambled to evacuate area residents.

One hospital and 3,300 students from 11 schools in Paradise were evacuated.

"We're working very hard to get people out". Butte County CalFire Chief Darren Read said at a news conference that two firefighters and multiple residents were injured.

"The town is devastated, everything is destroyed", said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott Maclean, who spent much of the day in Paradise.

Fire officials said the flames were fueled by winds, low humidity, dry air and severely parched brush and ground from months without rain. The extent of the injuries and specific damage count was not immediately known as officials could not access the risky area.

Harrowing tales of escape and heroic rescues emerged from Paradise, where the entire community of 27,000 was ordered to evacuate.

The school closures cover all districts in the county, including those in Paradise, Chico, Oroville and the Butte County Office of Education as well.

Travel was limited on U.S. Highway 101 in Ventura County, state highway patrol troopers said.

Many abandoned their cars on the side of the road, fleeing on foot. The fire earlier ripped through Paradise, about 30 kilometres east of Chico.

Morgan Mason said her father told her that he could hear propane tanks blowing up all over Paradise this morning.

But she was still a long distance from safety. Already cars were bumper to bumper, she says. On the side of the road, trees were catching on fire and falling over. "The message I want to get out is if you can evacuate, you need to evacuate", Honea said. "I'm driving through fire as we speak".

His wife was trying the four roads that lead out of Paradise.

Others described watching flames consume their property as they evacuated.

Finally, she made it out and the family reunited in Chico.

At the hospital with the stranded patients, some buildings caught fire and were damaged, but the main facility, Adventist Health Feather River Hospital, was not, spokesperson Jill Kinney said.

"I hope people got out".

"Things started exploding", said resident Gina Oviedo. He was about 30 minutes away in Chico, where he works as a pharmacist.

More than 20 million people are under red flag warnings from Northern to Southern California on Friday due to several wildfires across the state.

The Woolsey Fire also burned through several homes in Oak Park in Simi Valley, just a few miles from Thousand Oaks, the site of a deadly shooting at a bar late Wednesday that killed at least 12 people.

BAAQMD said while most of the smoke was expected to remain aloft the public would likely see and smell smoke from the quickly-expanding fire.

With a blaze in Butte County reddening the Berkeley skies and a fire in Oakland prompting full response from its fire department, Berkeley Fire Department is sending engines for support.

Fire officials anticipate the fire would reach the Pacific Ocean.
