Emma Thompson tries to sneak kiss from Prince William at damehood ceremony

And it was a question that made the royal blush!

"I'm very outspoken politically", said the 59-year-old, adding that she hoped to use her damehood to bring attention to so-called "holiday hunger", which sees up to three million United Kingdom children go hungry during the school holidays.

"If you're first up, you have to be more formal on such an occasion", she explained, according to E!

She said: "I'd like to inspire others and empower others to believe in themselves, especially people with Down's syndrome".

That's right, Thompson saved herself from wearing a pair of fancy heels that surely would have distracted her during her big moment with Prince William. "He said, 'This day isn't about me, it's about you'".

As someone who's been in the public eye for decades, Thompson has crossed paths with the royals before and is apparently an old friend of Prince Charles.

Yet despite her successful career, the actress confessed to feeling shy around Prince William revealing: "I love Prince William". "I'm sorry, but that's just rubbish. I've known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other", she told the Associated Press. "He wasn't having any of it".

Worldwide treasure Emma Thompson, star of stage and screen, the woman who gave Mrs. Potts a second life, and the reason that Love Actually is the masterpiece that it is just became a dame.

But, in her own imitable fashion, the actress and activist made light of the award in September when she appeared on Late Night with Seth Myers and joked that she was only accepting the damehood because she wanted "some new jewellery".

Another reason why you can't mess with a dame!
