Indonesian airline passengers revolt over sacks of stinky durian

Travelers aboard a Sriwajiya Air flight from Bengkulu, in Indonesia, to Jakarta complained of the odor prior to takeoff, insisting that the airline remove the spiky, smelly fruit - of which there was almost 4,500 pounds in the cargo hold - from the flight, per The Straits Times.

In a video posted by one of the passengers, Amir Zidane, he claims there were three tonnes of durian that were removed from the flight to conform to the passengers' demands.

A number of online commenters lauded the passengers' refusal to fly with such a large amount of durian on board, pointing to safety concerns in the wake of last week's Lion Air crash that killed 189 passengers and cabin crew.

The airline said the fruit would not endanger the flight and the smell would go once the plane was in the air.

A passenger onboard the plane detailed the incident, which took place on Monday, in a Facebook post.

"I complained to the stewardess but they told me to just fill in a complaint form".

The airline nonetheless justified its decision to transport the fruit saying: "It's not illegal to carry durian in a flight as long as it is wrapped properly in accordance with flight regulations-carried inside the hold", senior corporate communications manager Retri Maya said in a statement on Tuesday.

Crew members assured him the smell would vanish as soon as the plane was in the air. They all chanted back, "not us!'".

The durian is known for being one of the grossest-smelling fruits in the world-think "turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock", as one food writer has described it, per Smithsonian.

The head of Bengkulu airport, Anies Wardhana told local news outlet Detik the airport would "evaluate" future packing situations so that they would "not cause passenger discomfort". Some countries have banned patrons from carrying and eating it on public transportation, airlines, and accommodation services.
