Irish PM sees chances fading for Brexit deal in November Reuters, Helsinki

Britain has complained this would create a border in the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom.

The EU wants to see a breakthrough within a week if leaders are to endorse any Brexit deal in November, official and diplomatic sources told Reuters. An EU summit tentatively scheduled for November 17-18 is no longer on the cards.

Mrs May updated European Council president Donald Tusk on the situation on Wednesday morning.

May will meet other European Union leaders on Thursday in France and Belgium at commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One. She is scheduled to have lunch with French President Emmanuel Macron and dinner with other leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance in Brussels.

Britain leaves the EU on March 29, but a deal must be sealed in the coming weeks to leave enough time for the U.K. Parliament and European Parliament to sign it off.

Ever since the shock 2016 Brexit referendum sent sterling to its biggest one-day fall in decades, the pound has been see-sawing on differing perceptions of whether a deal will be done.

In Paris, Britain's foreign secretary, Jeremy Hunt, said Brexit negotiations are in "the final phase" and that he is confident an agreement will be reached.

The european negotiator Michel Barnier held Wednesday insufficient progress with the London agreement on the exit of the Uk from the EU, and cooled the hopes of the british of an extraordinary summit in early November.

A memorandum leaked from within the British government gives a taste of a possible finale to the Brexit drama: Prime Minister Theresa May hails a deal in just over 10 days, supporters cheer as arranged, and the pact is put to a vote in parliament on November 27.

"We are not there yet".

In a wide-ranging speech that moved from European defence to electric vehicles, he mentioned Brexit only to promise to "fulfill my Brexit mission to the end" and make a brief opening joke that his speech would be short because "the clock is ticking".

The Prime Minister told MPs last month that 95% of the deal had been agreed, although the key sticking point of the backstop to prevent a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland remained unresolved.

"We need much more work" to clinch an agreement, Michel Barnier told The Associated Press on the sidelines of a congress of center-right political parties in Helsinki, Finland.

Many business chiefs and investors fear such a "no-deal" Brexit would weaken the West, panic financial markets and block the arteries of trade.
