Let's get high: MI just voted to legalize recreational marijuana

With 79 per cent of polls reporting, almost 61 per cent voters in the state voted against the legalization of recreational marijuana use for those 21 and older.

In Utah and Missouri, voters on Tuesday decided that patients should have access to medical marijuana.

MI would be the first U.S. Midwest state to allow its residents to purchase and consumer cannabis legally.

North Dakotans decisively rejected a proposal to make marijuana legal for recreational purposes.

"Western and Northeastern states have led the way on legalizing marijuana, but the victory in MI powerfully demonstrates the national reach of this movement", Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, said in a press release.

Voters this evening passed Proposal 18-1 into law, making MI the 10th state to legalize marijuana.

Impose a 10-ounce limit for marijuana kept at residences and require amounts over 2.5 ounces be secured in locked containers.

MI already had a sizable medical marijuana industry, but Tuesday's vote means residents 21 and older can now consume the drug and grow up to 12 plants for personal use.

Voters in Missouri were considering three separate proposals to legalize medical marijuana on their ballot, and all three aimed to legalize the use, purchase and possession of marijuana for medical purposes and would allow the state to set up a regulatory framework for licensed dispensaries. The industry would be subject to a 10 percent tax, as well as a sales tax. Municipalities can choose to ban or restrict marijuana businesses within their borders. In October, Utah medical marijuana advocates and state lawmakers agreed to a compromise bill that would legalize medical marijuana in the state but with some differences from the ballot initiative.
