"Not Less Than A Terrorist": Tamil Nadu Minister On The Film 'Sarkar'

In the state, too, Sarkar broke records by reaching the spot that was previously dominated by SS Rajamouli's Baahubali - The Conclusion.

Sarkar is taking the global box office by storm. The movie had released in above 650 screens in Tamil Nadu.

After actor Vijay's "Mersal" landed in a controversy over dialogues on GST last year, it's the turn of the actor's Diwali release, "Sarkar", to end up in the crosshairs of the powers that be this year, with a few ministers threatening government's intervention to get some "offensive scenes" from the movie removed. The film had 2018's biggest opening.

Vijay's Sarkar hit screens on November 6 and has been facing a backlash from the ruling AIADMK. The film released in 800 theatres in the state and close to 3000 worldwide.

Sarkar went on to script a record in Kerala with its big release as well. "The filmed opened in 69 theatres in Chennai and both Day 1 and Day 2 are running to packed houses", he said. With this number of screens, we expect Sarkar to set new benchmarks at the ticket windows.

According to trade sources, this is the sixth 100-crore grosser for Vijay and fourth in a row after Theri, Bairavaa and Mersal. The film also stars Keerthy Suresh, Radha Ravi, Varalaxmi Sarath Kumar and Yogi Babu. BJP's Tamil Nadu chief, Tamilisai Soundararajan, had pointed out how some scenes showed the Goods and Services Tax and Digital India in poor light. While Sanju minted Rs 34.75 crore on Day 1, Sarkar has surpassed it in the South circuits itself.

'State information and publicity minister Kadambur C Raju asked the actor to remove some scenes, which, he alleged, attacked the welfare schemes of the previous AIADMK government headed by Jayalalithaa.

Sarkar, released in over 3000 screens around the world, has earned a gross collection of approximately $145,000 just from the premiere shows in the USA and the number, after the first day is expected to only go up.
