Papa Gino’s pizza chain closes all but one location in CT

The company, which previously boasted approximately 150 stores across New England, showed only 97 locations on its website Sunday; of those 78 were in MA. It changed its name to Papa Gino's in 1968 and expanded throughout Boston, other parts of MA and Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. "This restaurant is now permanently closed".

In a statement on Monday, PGHC Holdings Inc., the parent company of the pizzeria and D'Angelo Grilled Sandwiches, said it has reached an agreement with a Wynnchurch Capital portfolio company headquartered in IL to sell the company.

Papa Gino's is a nostalgic taste of New England for many who grew up here. Terms weren't disclosed. The release also said that the company filed for protection under Chapter 11 in an effort to maintain operations at the restaurants that were still open while pursuing the sale.

The company said it would try and move affected employees to restaurants still operating.

The company said it closed 95 underperforming stores on Sunday to begin the process of restructuring. As part of this process, and as is customary, PGHC will solicit competing offers to maximize the ultimate value of the sale, for both the company and its stakeholders.

"We are pleased to have reached an agreement that will ensure a long and prosperous future for these iconic New England restaurants", Wendland said in the release. "We are confident that the agreement with Wynnchurch achieves all of those goals".

Employees at several remaining Papa Gino's referred phone calls from a Boston.com reporter to the corporate office, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment. "We look forward to serving our guests the pizza and grilled sandwiches they have come to love over many decades".

The Papa Gino's company started in East Boston in 1961 as Piece O' Pizza.
