VW's junior Amarok bakkie is called the Tarok. And it's very capable

"The Tarok's DNA adds an exhilarating dynamic to the segment", declared Klaus Bischoff, head designer at Volkswagen. In fact, when the production version of Tarok does go on sale, an event VW has confirmed will be the case by soon in South America, its marketing placement would certainly be as a junior Amarok.

Following last week's teaser, VW has fully uncovered its new Tarok pickup concept at the Sao Paulo International Motor Show in Brazil.

The Tarok Concept is a pick-up spanning five-metres with its four-door double cab layout.

The Wolfsburg-based brand says the unibody concept features a "large variable loading area", which can be extended thanks to a folding rear panel. Built ground up - according to VW - the Tarok is based on the same MQB platform as the new crop of Volkswagens including the T-Roc and smaller T-Cross. The distinct material for the roof with roof rails and a modern SUV design makes the Tarok Concept a rather handsome looking thing.

Instead, those rear seats fold flat, with no bulkhead between their back cushions and the load bay, stretching your carrying capacity right out when you stow them away, while keeping the cabin waterproof when you flip them back up. The engine can run on Brazil's TotalFlex fuel unit with pure ethanol as well as a gasoline-ethanol blend. The TSI engine in the Tarok Concept is also combined with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive. If you like what you see here, you'll be pleased to know that Volkswagen has said it would make "barely any changes" to the Tarok's design from concept to series production. The production model will also offer the option of a 110kW 2-litre TDI turbodiesel, with other variants and drive configurations likely joining the line-up at a later stage. After that, the new pickup will join the Amarok in the German carmaker's global model range.
