Beef recall expanded to more than 12 million pounds

Beef recalls issued earlier this year have been expanded to cover more than 12 million pounds of meat that could possibly be contaminated with Salmonella, federal officials said.

The products, including ground beef, were packaged between July 26, 2018 and September 7, 2018, and the recalled products have the establishment number "EST".

The epidemiological investigation has identified 246 confirmed case-patients from 26 states with illness onset dates ranging from July 26 to September 7, 2018. No deaths have been reported, but 56 people have been hospitalized.

Among the products recalled were ground beef, boneless beef sirloin trimmings, chuck beef, brisket and several types of burgers. "267" inside the USDA inspection mark.

Unlike listeria, which can take weeks or months to cause an infection, salmonella typically has its effect within 48 hours. And an outbreak in 2009 linked to a peanut factory sickened more than 500 people, eight of whom died.

Almost 250 people in 26 states have fallen ill, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service says.

The recall by JBS Tolleson, Inc. is an expansion of a similar recall that was first issued in October.

The meat was sold at Kroger and other stores. Officials are anxious consumers may overlook the recall because they've stored this beef in their freezers. The USDA says any products still in people's freezers should be thrown away. Most people recover without treatment in less than a week, but some may require hospitalization for dehydration.

The USDA is also reminding consumers to safely prepare raw beef and make sure it is properly cooked. "Other cuts of beef should be cooked to a temperature of 145°F and allowed to rest for at least three minutes".

Consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact the JBS USA Consumer hotline at 800-727-2333.
